Sacramento Historic District Plans
Page & Turnbull prepared the Sacramento Historic District Plans for 27 of the city’s historic districts to help manage change in a way that preserves Sacramento’s history and character. Facing rapid growth and historic preservation challenges, Sacramento required historic district plans to be prepared for every historic district. Prior to the start of the project, however, historic districts had not been surveyed since the 1970s. Page & Turnbull completed the Historic District Plans as a way to offer guidance for managing these areas and shaping future development decisions. The 430-page document summarizes the historical and architectural significance of each district and outlines customized design standards to ensure that the unique characteristics of each neighborhood will be preserved and enhanced. Additionally, the report included design standards common to all of Sacramento’s historic districts. Our team conducted extensive historic research and a comprehensive survey of each district to develop individual historic contexts, significance evaluations, periods of significance updates, lists of character-defining features, and an inventory of contributing and non-contributing resources. The Historic District Plans were unanimously approved by City Council in December 2019 with support from a broad cross-section of the community.
