Sacramento Historic District Plans
Page & Turnbull led the research and expansion of the Monterey Path of History to highlight the contributions and perspectives of underrecognized communities that are part of Monterey’s diverse history.
The “Monterey Path of History” is an existing two-mile walking path that includes 55 historic buildings and sites throughout downtown. Yellow-tiled markers set into the sidewalk help visitors follow this path. Page & Turnbull worked with the City of Monterey Museums and Cultural Arts staff and Commission to develop a Specific Plan to expand the trail.
The Specific Plan identified significant sites associated with Indigenous (Ohlone), Japanese, Chinese, Portuguese, Italian, and Black and African American communities, as well as Hispanic and Latinx communities beyond the traditional lens of Spanish- and Mexican-era development (ca. 1770-1846), which were the focus of the existing Path of History. In addition to the Specific Plan, Page & Turnbull developed a Social Justice and Equity template for the Museums & Cultural Arts Commission and staff to use when planning future programs. It is a streamlined checklist of topics to consider that will improve equity when implementing arts programs.
