Taylor B. Stockdale Community Center

Built as a gym in 1931 and repurposed as a student center in the 1980s, Page & Turnbull redesigned the 6,600 sq ft building to further elevate its status as Webb’s ‘home base’ for students, faculty, and staff. The Mission Revival style building needed to be comfortable and welcoming for students, faculty, and staff. Our design enhanced the indoor-outdoor connections, increased building envelope performance and day lighting, and created a positive first impression of the campus. Historic elements including the original maple flooring and stained glass windows were salvaged and reinstalled. The space is flexible – accommodating small group for studying and hanging out and the entire student body for gatherings. Integrating a state-of-the-art cooling system within the original building shell without compromising the historic character of the space was a challenge of the project. Previously abandoned underfloor duct chases were utilized to preserve the clean lines of the exposed roof trusses, insulation was strategically added throughout, high performance window film was installed to cut down on solar heat gain, and industrial ceiling fans integrated with the mechanical system were included to cut down on energy use while keeping the building comfortable.
