John Galen Howard

SUMMARY

  • Maintained a practice in Boston and New York before moving to San Francisco.
  • Served as university architect for the University of California at Berkeley from 1902-1927.
  • Founded the Department of Architecture at Berkeley and trained many of Northern California’s important architects, including Julia Morgan.
  • Buildings constructed during his tenure include: Hearst Memorial Mining Building , the Greek Theatre, Doe Library, Durant Hall, Wellman Hall, and North Gate Hall.
  • Served on the commission for the Panama-Pacific Exposition in San Francisco
  • Served on the Advisory Committee for Rebuilding After the Earthquake and Fire in 1906, in the development of the San Francisco Civic Center and in the construction of a Municipal Auditorium and War Memorial.
