John Galen Howard

Educated: Massachusetts Institute of Technology and l'Ecole des Beaux Arts
Died: 1931
SUMMARY
Maintained a practice in Boston and New York before moving to San Francisco.
Served as university architect for the University of California at Berkeley from 1902-1927.
Founded the Department of Architecture at Berkeley and trained many of Northern California’s important architects, including Julia Morgan.
Buildings constructed during his tenure include:
Hearst Memorial Mining Building
, the Greek Theatre, Doe Library, Durant Hall, Wellman Hall, and North Gate Hall.
Served on the commission for the Panama-Pacific Exposition in San Francisco
Served on the Advisory Committee for Rebuilding After the Earthquake and Fire in 1906, in the development of the
San Francisco Civic Center
and in the construction of a Municipal Auditorium and War Memorial.
